"rockingthe2" (unpredictable-swerve)
04/05/2019 at 11:30 • Filed to: None | 7 | 35 |
Stolen car (according to the police who failed to catch them) ran a red taking a right turn, proceeded to use all 3 lanes to turn causing traffic to slam on brakes and swerve, I hit the white line on the median, slowed down, checked to my side to ensure it was safe to get back in the road, and the car in front of me brake checked the stolen car hard without seeing me, he came to a complete stop, I was doing probably near 30-35 and also came to a complete stop, using my face.
For what it’s worth, I spent a LOT of money on good rated gear, all ECE compliant (One of the highest ratings for motorcycle armor) and had on full gear minus riding pants, which are now on the list of things to get. Knee armor may have saved my tibia from being fractured.
Injuries aren’t the worst I’ve heard of... broken Tibia Plateau, bruised pelvis, a bruised tailbone, a bruised elbow, bruised heel, bruised ego, sprained knees, sprained ankles, sprained wrist, and a lacerated chin. No spinal/neck/back injuries thankfully.
The bike is in similar shape, front and side fairings are toast, the stem has a ripped chunk of metal out, forks are bent, and light/cluster combo is probably toasted. Rebuilding it is probably going to happen in a few weeks once I’m actually mobile and not on crutches or in a serious amount of pain. Cops issued no tickets, no fault was given as the stolen car was not in the vicinity.
Oppo’s who ride, seriously, full face ECE rated helmet . I fucking crumpled the C-pillar of a Honda Crosstour using nothing but my face and I don’t even have a headache. My chin laceration happened when I hit the ground or their rear windshield wiper, that part happened a little to fast to remember. Armored jacket saved me from a broken arm, collarbone, or shoulder as I bounced between the car and road, and my armored gloves saved me from any worse damage to my hands.

1) good on you for gearing up, and glad it ended as well as it did.
2) on the down side, you’ll really start to feel sore/painful the couple days after the injury.

Every time a sportbike is wrecked, a streetfighter rises from the ashes like some squid-like phoenix.
Looking at front stem replacements on Ebay , seem to be going for about $250, cheap LED headlight, slap the cluster back on and rip all the fairings off. Maybe some crash bars this time.

Thanks, There are 3 people I work with that had a similar injury from various incidents (Rugby, bicycle accident, car accident) in the last 2 months, so at the very least misery has company. Gotta make an appointment with ortho to see if my knee will require surgery or not.

Whoa! Glad you’re (relatively) okay. Proper gear is hugely imporant, glad you were wearing it!

This made me chuckle. Can’t wait to see your phoenix!

Yeah, I think the worst part is it’s actually not fully my bike. My roommate REALLY wanted a GSXR 1000 and said I could treat it as mine if I just paid him what he pays monthly on the Ninja. Wasn’t going to pass that deal up. We are planning the rebuild and he gets final say on what it ends up looking like and what parts go into it.
Funny part is though, he was in front of me when I hit the Honda, and my left shoe went over his head which let him know I got into the accident.

Damn, that could have been much worse. Glad you’re as good as you are!
Did the guy that brake checked even give a damn that he caused you to faceplant his car?

Yeah, the guy was super nice and apologetic, he was on the way to the ER with his daughter who was quite sick when the accident happened so he came in to check on me a few times. Turns out he works for the VA and I’m going to be going through the VA disability claim process here in a few months so I may run into him again.
No hard feelings on either side, I’d have probably done the same thing to the fucker in the stolen car if I were in his shoes, just wrong place, wrong time for a few people. Insurance is covering what needs to be covered and nobody died. Considering my last ambulance ride involved a helicopter I’m pretty alright with how this turned out.

Man I’m glad you made it out relatively ok. That could have been deadly. Also agree on the full armor all the time. It’s what saved my dads life riding.

For sure, one minute you’re riding back from Home Depot trying to finish up a quick project, the next minute you’re on the ground covered in blood with the remnants of a motorcycle covering 3 lanes of traffic.

Jesus, glad you’re ok! As someone that’s been down both wearing and not wearing gear, I totally agree. The time I went down in a full suit I got right back up and surprisingly was no worse for wear. The times younger me went down not wearing gear were messier, even at low speeds.
On the bike, be real careful to inspect the frame around the stem, they tend to crack when loaded that way.

So glad you’re ok and alive and all that. Could have been way worse. Good for you for having the good sense to invest in quality equipment.

Yeah, my insurance is covering my gear under a personal property insurance claim. Probably going to buy the exact same stuff

I’ll make sure to keep an eye out, the stem has a good chunk of metal simply missing from the bike so there was quite a bit of force involved.

Wow. Guess, you’re fully buying in the Ninja now, huh? Sounds like he’s an understanding friend, at least.
The shoe thing reminds me of a story, I was riding with some friends once and the guy in the lead’s rear axle nut CAME OFF HIS BIKE! It flew off, hit the guy in front of me on the boot - luckily he was wearing steel toes - bounced up and I saw it and ducked and it missed my face by an inch. So then I sped up to catch this guy and tell him shit was falling off his bike - he thought I wanted to play and gunned it. So I backed way off and started waving my arms and pointing to the side and he finally got the message to pull over.

We have a pretty good understanding, we break something of the others, we make them financially whole to the others satisfaction . We were actually coming back from home depot because we needed a part to fix a toilet at the house and i was showing him how to do it.

Glad you’re ok, but that bike is totalled.
Your best course of action is to b uy it back from the insurance company. Then convert it to a track bike, and never ride on the street again .
Then go spend $12 0k on a new diesel truck and toy hauler. You’ll need it.

Jesus. Glad you’re okay.
That said, not really sure why they didn’t cite the brake
checker. Brake checks are definitely illegal.
